Been about a month since I set foot on the dark continent. I just might mess around and not come back.
Bryan’s Lament
False starts and stops?
More of the same old stuff. We’re being urged (once again) to let our projects transcend the lacquer of preconceived notions that we tend to slather all over them at the outset. It’s been said before, but it’s still true and cogent knowledge. It’s important to have some sort of premeditated course of action when embarking on a story, but it’s even more important not to delimit ourselves to these schema we’ve erected in our minds.
The development and coverage of a picture story should be something organic that changes like some kinda weird journalism weed. It grows out of control, as it should, and the photographer should be equally elastic and fluid, being able to keep with the story and confine the elements of the story to an arc that makes sense.
When asked “how do I know I’m done” in regards to covering a story, the answer is simple: “you’ll know when you’re done when you’re finished.”
Great advice, Lamott.
